Chapter 30
As Ruth drained some pasta over the kitchen sink, she could feel the frustration of the day getting to her. The ongoing friction between her and DI Weaver was making her feel uncomfortable. And the conversation with Nina Taylor had left both her and Nick feeling a little flat. They had hoped that Nina would help them narrow down the investigation in terms of suspects. Plus, Ruth was anxious about hearing back from the adoption agency.
She was distracted and, as the pasta suddenly dropped into the colander, the steam rose up and scolded the side of her right hand.
âShit!â she said, moving the colander over to the work surface. Then she went to run her hand under some cold water. âBollocks, bollocks.â
âYou swear too much,â said a voice.
It was Daniel.
Ruth looked around and gave him an apologetic smile. âSorry, I burned my hand.â
Is it okay?â he asked.
âItâll be fine. Itâs my own silly fault.â
âYou tell me not to swear,â he said with a shrug.
âYeah, thatâs because youâre eleven.â
âWhat age can I swear then?â
Ruth laughed. âYou canât.â
âWhat? Never?â
âNo.â
Daniel looked confused. âSome of the kids at school swear loads.â
âDo they?â Ruth asked, as she started to stir the bolognaise sauce on the hob.
âKatie Palmer told our PE teacher to âfuck offâ the other day,â he said, shaking his head. âSheâs been suspended.â
âGood, but itâs probably not a good idea to repeat exactly what she said.â
âOh yeah,â Daniel said with a smile. âSorry.â
âCheddar or Parmesan on your bolognaise?â she asked.
âCheddar,â he replied, as though that was a silly question.
Then Ruth noticed that he was holding a piece of paper in his hand. âWhatâs that?â
âItâs a permission slip. Weâre going on a school trip to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester and then weâre going to the Arndale Centre.â
âSounds great,â Ruth said, but something about Danielâs face suggested he was worried about going. âDonât you want to go?â
âYes,â he said hesitantly.
Ruth wasnât convinced. âAre you worried about going to Manchester?â
âSort of,â he admitted. âItâs just Iâve never been to a big shopping centre before. What if I get lost? Or what if the school bus goes without me?â
âThey wonât go without you,â Ruth said, trying to reassure him. âYouâve got your phone if anything happens.â
He lowered his eyes and looked troubled. âI wish you were going.â
âSo do I,â she said with a smile. âI tell you what. Why donât you put one of those tracker apps on your mobile phone. Then if you get lost or left behind, I can find you by looking at my phone.â
âNo, itâs all right,â he said, although she could see he was still worried. âI might download it another time.â
Ruth smiled at Danielâs bravado. He didnât want to admit that he was scared.
He moved a little closer to Ruth. âYou know that lady?â
âWhat lady is that?â she asked, as she opened the cupboard to grab some plates.
âThe lady that came yesterday to talk to me, you and Sarah.â
âSusannah?â
âYeah. Has she told you anything about my adoption yet?â
Ruth could see that it was troubling him.
